It was so nice this afternoon, Bear and Rabbit (the very best of friends) decided to go out for a Sunday drive.
Yesterday, I was watching my friend ink a drawing he was doing with an brush pen. I’ve used one before, but never really gave it a full shot. After watching him ink, and because I’ve been in a serious Calvin and Hobbes phase lately (Watterson’s brush work is gorgeous, especially in the later years), I decided I had to give the brush pen another try. So I borrowed a pen, cracked open the moleskin, and drew the first thing that came to mind. Here’s the inks sans color:

This is an interesting twist on your style, mainly with the brushwork instead of pen. NICELY done sir!

That is one of my favorite things I’ve ever seen. Great job with the brush pen! What kind of pen was it? I’m looking for a new kind to try.

I can’t tell you how much I love that piece…damn you Parker, damn you!!

This is brilliant Jake. You should pick up the brush pen more often. The color is just right. It’s interesting how a different tool can switch up the look of your work. I’ve been dabbling with a brush pen myself—love it.

Nice. I like the half-toning.
I agree with Todd, Rabbit appears full of trepidation about the day’s journey in the flivver.

More! More! More! I thought you had scanned this out of an old children’s book when I first saw it (that’s a book for children that is old, not a book for old children)…

If you don’t mind, how did you achieve the half-tone color effects? Was this a PS filter?

That is amazing! Just a raw ink drawing with no rough pencils this good is the stuff of legends!
I missed Hobbes as soon as I saw this… and yet at the same time deeply desired to read a story about these characters.
Beauty!

Jake you never fail to astound. Is your molskine softcovered? I’ve been thinking of getting one and was looking at a hardcovered one but was worried the binding might be to tight. I thought the softcover might be better. It looks like you’re lays out nice and flat.

Amazing. You should ink this way forever. I’d love to know what kind of pen you used as well – I need to try that.

I just lived Inktober backwards, ended up here, and felt edified. Maybe we can have an Inkcember and Inkuary also?
